A Leaf into Dharmender Tewari’s Medical History

Meet Dharmender Tewari, a 59-year-old banker hailing from Punjab. Dharmender, with a weight of 92 kg and a waist diameter of 112 cm, was facing significant challenges with his blood sugar levels. Consistently ranging between 350 to 450 mg/dl, his HbA1c was recorded at 8.2%, indicating a diabetic level. Despite consulting multiple doctors in search of a solution, Dharmender found himself dissatisfied with the lack of progress and effectiveness of the medications prescribed to him.

However, a ray of hope entered his life in the form of a dear friend who became an agent of change. This friend, a member of Fitterfly, recommended an online program to Dharmender. Initially skeptical about the potential benefits of an online program, given his prior experiences with doctors and medications, Dharmender decided to place his trust in his friend’s recommendation and took the brave step of enrolling in our Diabetes Care Program.

Initial Observations that Shaped Dharmender’s Journey

In the early stages of Dharmender’s engagement with our program, our coaches made important observations that provided valuable insights into his diabetes management

Observation 1 : Understanding the Impact of Meal Frequency and Choices  

Upon analyzing Dharmender’s Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) graph, we discovered a correlation between his elevated sugar levels and frequent meals consumed within short intervals, particularly during the mornings. Dharmender’s snack choices often consisted of bakery products such as toast, biscuits, and similar high-sugar and high-calorie items. It became evident that these food choices were hindering efforts to stabilize his blood sugar levels.

Observation 2 : Fitness level going south

Dharmender’s fitness evaluation by our Physio Coach revealed that his fitness scores were low. He was not actively doing any form of exercise.  

Implementing Changes for Effective Diabetes Management

To address these concerns and support Dharmender’s progress, our team of Coaches implemented targeted changes across various aspects of his diabetes management plan. Here’s a summary of the key modifications made:

1) Spacing Out Meals

Dharmender was made aware of the adverse effects of frequent meals and increased caloric intake on his blood sugar levels. He received guidance to maintain a healthier eating pattern by allowing a 3 to 4-hour gap between his meals. This adjustment aimed to promote better stability in his blood sugar levels.

2) Reducing High Carbohydrate Intake

The nutrition coaches identified that Dharmender had a high carbohydrate intake, which contributed to his challenges in blood sugar management. To address this, he was advised to reduce his carbohydrate consumption by adjusting the quantity of chapatis and adopting a balanced plate method. Furthermore, his evening snacks, which previously included fried and maida-based products like farsaan, were replaced with healthier alternatives such as nuts and seeds. Additionally, sugar-less tea became a recommended choice.

3) Enhancing Fitness Levels

During the physiotherapy coach assessment, it was observed that Dharmender had a lower overall fitness score. To improve his metabolism and overall fitness, the physio coach recommended a combination of cardio and strength training exercises. Emphasis was placed on reducing belly fat and enhancing insulin resistance. Dharmender was encouraged to incorporate daily walking into his routine.

4) Psychology Sessions and Continuity

While Dharmender’s daughter is a psychologist, he opted out of Fitterfly’s psychology sessions. Nevertheless, they remained an integral part of his comprehensive diabetes management plan, ensuring holistic support throughout his journey.
