How Do You Know You Have PCOS?

Well, your doctor is the right person to make that decision.
When you visit a doctor, this is what might happen.
- He/she can ask you questions about things that trouble you, your family history.
- A physical examination to assess other symptoms.
Be ready to discuss any period problems, weight changes or any other concerns that you have. No problem is too small.
You may be asked to get certain tests based upon your individual condition.
- To confirm PCOS – this may include ultrasound, blood tests etc. Ultrasound is a way of seeing your ovaries for the presence of any cysts in them. It is not necessary to have an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. You may have PCOS even without the presence of any cysts.
- To rule out diseases other than PCOS – In few cases, doctors advise blood tests or perform a pelvic examination to rule out other conditions.
- To check for overall health and complications that can occur with PCOS – Your doctor can ask for blood tests such as blood sugar, lipids or check for your blood pressure, weight.
A diagnosis of PCOS usually requires at least 2 of the following –
- Absent or infrequent periods.
- Raised male hormone levels (androgens). These can be measured in the blood and may cause symptoms like hirsutism (unwanted excess hair growth) or scalp hair loss.
- Polycystic ovaries. As seen on ultrasound, these are ovaries that are larger than normal and contain multiple fluid-filled cysts.
There are specific guidelines which doctors use to make a diagnosis.
Don’t get bogged down by all the complicated names. These are there just to help your doctor make better decisions regarding your health. Do not worry if your doctor didn’t advise any of these. That just means these tests were not needed for you.
Once you have been diagnosed, it just means proper treatment can now be started. Plan regular visits with your doctor to monitor the disease, rule out any future complications and be your healthiest self.
