10 Interesting Ways to Bust Stress

From simple techniques like watching your favourite sitcom to going for a jog, there are several tried and tested ways you can use to cope with stress. Let’s deep dive into a few!

1) Watch your favourite TV show

Feeling under a pile of stress? A simple and enjoyable strategy is to – cue up your favourite sitcom, preferably something light-hearted. Let the laughter and the carefree world of the show transport you away from your worries for a while.

While this isn’t a cure-all (we wish it was but alas…), we can assure you it’s a temporary mood-booster. This little break can clear your mind, making space for fresh perspectives.

Once you’re feeling lighter and your mind is refreshed, you’ll be in a better place to address the root cause of your stress. Sounds manageable, doesn’t it? So go ahead, hit play and enjoy the laughter therapy!

2) Physical Self-Soothing Techniques

Yes, you read that right! Self-soothing techniques can be very effective in relieving your stress and clearing your mind. Two of the most recommended self-soothing stress busters include

1) Tapping: Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT tapping is a form of light tapping on the acupressure points on the body that helps lower stress levels by slowing down the heart rate and regulating blood pressure. Infact, it has been used as an alternative therapy for anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other similar conditions.

2) Cool down time: Another easy way of self-soothing is to wash or apply ice to the ‘pulse points’ of your body, such as the wrists, ankles, and back of knees. Additionally, washing your face, feet and hands can instantly calm your stress and relieve the heaviness one feels in these situations. Using cold water or applying ice to the pulse points instantly also helps regulate the body temperature, especially during the hot summer.

3. The voo sound

The Voo sound technique is a type of somatic technique during which trained therapists monitor your body sensations, action patterns and soothing behaviours. The goal of this technique is to regulate the body’s responses and override the response of the nervous system. The voo sound technique is effective in providing comfort during stress and feelings of anxiety.

4. Plug in your de-stress music playlist

Music has something about it; it instantly transports you to a world that may be different from your present reality. Whether it’s your favourite song, de-stress or workout playlist, plug it on and experience the stress lift off. Moving your eyes to something more soothing, like trees or plants in your house or just the horizon, can be an additional stress buster.

5. Count Backwards

Distraction has proven to be effective in taking your mind off the stress trigger. A simple distraction that almost always works is counting backwards. Start from a high number of your choice and count back. While counting, your brain is more likely to focus on the numbers and forget the stressor for a while.

6. Reset for 5 minutes every 2 hours

If you are going through a stressful period, it may be difficult to focus on your work or activities at home. Practise ‘reset for five minutes’ every two hours. Taking a mindfulness break by standing up, taking a short walk, exercising, drinking some water, or simply taking deep breaths can be helpful in relieving your stress levels.

7. Self-Love Hug

Stress comes in all forms and there may be times when you feel lonely. Well, how about giving yourself a hug? Wrap your arms around yourself and give yourself all the love you can and deserve. Believe it or not, you are surely going to feel lighter and more positive. How about you give that a try right away? 🥰

8. Go for a run

Another easy and fun yet effective stress busting technique is going for a quick run. Exercising doesn’t make your stress disappear but it sure does release happy hormones (serotonin and endorphins) that can reduce the intensity of your stress and emotions. Infact, heading for a short run or jog can also help clear your mind, allowing you to find a logical solution to the causative agent of your stress.

9. Meditation

A tried and tested stress-busting technique is meditation. If practised regularly, it has lasting effects on how your mind deals with stress in any given situation. Take deep breaths and while doing so focus on the inhalation and exhalation. This allows you to be present in the moment, to be grateful for yourself and allows you to develop positivity to deal with your stress.

10. Speak to your confidant

When stressed, pick up your phone or drop in to meet your close friend, family member or someone who is empathetic. Venting out your thoughts often helps you feel lighter and your confidant can give a different perspective of your situation.
