What is Ajwain water?

Ajwain water is made either by boiling ajwain in water and drinking it like tea or soaking ajwain overnight in water and consuming it in the morning.

In a lot of Indian homes, ajwain is used to help with bloating and digestion. In fact, in a lot of Indian households, it is the first thing that they suggest when you have flatulence or a bloated stomach.

You can either have ajwain water or just chew some carom seeds. So, why is ajwain water a popular home remedy?

What are the Health Benefits of Ajwain Water

There are many benefits of adding ajwain to your diet. Here are some of the most common health benefits of having ajwain water:

1. Improves digestion and reduces gas

  • Ajwain water has been commonly used to reduce problems with gas formation. Drinking ajwain water on a regular basis can help to reduce the formation of gas in the stomach.
  • In addition, having ajwain water can help improve your overall digestive health and aid in your regular bowel movements.

2. Regulates your bowel movements

  • Having ajwain water regularly can also help regulate your bowel movements and make your motions clear.
  • It is especially helpful for people with stomach and bowel issues such as constipation or diarrhea and can help make the bowel more regular and steady.

3. May help relieve abdominal pain

  • Ajwain water is also a powerful tool to help combat issues related to abdominal pain.
  • In some cases, having ajwain water can be a powerful home remedy even to help reduce abdominal pain that is associated with period pains or menstrual cramps.
  • In addition, having ajwain water on a regular basis may also help to make your monthly period cycle more regular.

However, substantial scientific research is lacking that directly links ajwain water consumption to menstrual regularity or specific menstrual health improvements.

  • But in case you have been diagnosed with a digestive condition or a stomach infection, or are experiencing severe menstrual cramps you should consult a doctor and remember that ajwain water is not in any way a substitute for medication.

4. Helps to alleviate common cough and cold

  • In case of nasal blockages, it can also help to relieve the nasal passage and help to discharge the mucus more effectively. This is also very helpful for those more prone to health issues such as wheezing or asthma.

5. Antibacterial and antifungal properties

  • Ajwain is also associated with various antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • It contains two active compounds known as carvacrol and thymol, which inhibit the growth of various bacteria as well as fungi.

6. Can fight against acidity

  • When you take ajwain water along with ginger and jeera seeds, it can further boost your digestive health and may help fight against acidity.
  • When combined, these can work against any flatulence or issues of bloating that you may feel.
