GLP-1 medications have taken the health world by storm – from doctor’s clinics to red carpets in Bollywood and Hollywood. They’re often talked about as game-changers for diabetes management and weight loss. But what’s the real story?

Are they safe? Do they actually work? And if our body already produces GLP-1, why do we need more from outside?

Let’s find out.

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a naturally occurring hormone in your gut. It helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release and reducing appetite

In simple words, it tells your brain: “I’m full, stop eating,” and helps manage how your body uses and stores glucose.

How Does GLP-1 Work?

GLP-1 receptor agonists (like semaglutide)  are medications that mimic the action of natural GLP-1 in your body. Here’s what they do:

  • Help your body release insulin when your blood sugar is high
  • Reduce another hormone called glucagon that usually increases blood sugar
  • Slow down digestion, so you feel full for longer
  • Send signals to your brain to curb hunger and reduce cravings

This multi-action approach is what makes GLP-1 drugs helpful in both type 2 diabetes and weight management

If Our Body Already Makes GLP-1, Why Take It From Outside?

Great question. And this is where it gets interesting.

In many people with obesity or type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 levels are lower or not as effective. Injectable GLP-1 agonists give your body that stronger, longer-lasting signal to:

  • Reduce appetite
  • Manage blood glucose
  • Support gradual, sustainable weight loss

Who is GLP-1 Recommended For?

GLP-1 drugs are primarily recommended for:

  • Adults with type 2 diabetes who aren’t seeing results from oral medications and need better blood sugar control
  • People with obesity or with a BMI over 30 (with or without diabetes) seeking medical weight management

Doctors may also consider GLP-1 RAs for patients with cardiovascular risk factors, as some of these drugs have shown heart-protective benefits.

How Does GLP-1 Help with Weight Loss?

GLP-1 RAs help with weight loss in several ways:

  • Reduce appetite: They slow stomach emptying and signal the brain to feel full sooner.
  • Lower calorie intake: By curbing hunger, people naturally eat less.
  • Stabilises blood sugar: They enhance insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar spikes.

Clinical trials show that people without diabetes can lose 6–17% of their body weight on GLP-1 drugs, while those with diabetes typically lose 4–6%. Semaglutide and liraglutide are among the most effective, with semaglutide often leading to greater weight loss.

Are There Any Side Effects of GLP-1?

Yes, like all medications, GLP-1 RAs can cause side effects. The most common are:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

Most side effects are mild and tend to improve over time. However, higher doses can increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, so regular medical supervision is essential.

Is GLP-1 Safe? What Experts Say

GLP-1 RAs are clinically approved and have a strong safety record when used as prescribed. They are not a shortcut or “magic bullet” – they work best as part of a comprehensive plan that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and ongoing medical supervision.

Even celebrities who’ve made headlines for dramatic transformations haven’t relied on GLP-1 alone. It’s part of a well-rounded plan.

For example, one of our members (name withheld for privacy) combined semaglutide with a balanced diet and regular exercise, achieving a 10% weight loss over six months and improved blood sugar control.

“I finally feel in control of my health again,” she shared.

What Are the Popular GLP-1 Drugs in India?

As of now, here are some of the top GLP-1 options available or coming soon:

GLP-1 RAs are not suitable for everyone. They should generally be avoided in:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GLP-1 safe for long-term use?

The long-term use of GLP-1 should be decided case by case under medical guidance only. That said, regular monitoring and dose adjustments are essential.

Will I gain weight again after stopping GLP-1?

Yes, you will gain weight after stopping GLP-1. GLP-1 helps regulate appetite. Once you stop, those signals may fade, leading to increased hunger. That’s why a supportive plan with nutrition, exercise, and coaching is critical during and after treatment.

Can I take GLP-1 without diabetes?

Always consult a doctor before starting any medicine. GLP-1 is also approved for people without diabetes who are dealing with obesity or weight-related conditions. However, it’s not meant for casual or cosmetic use.

Is GLP-1 addictive?

No, GLP-1 drugs are not addictive. They work by mimicking a natural hormone in your body. However, they should never be self-administered or taken for unsupervised weight loss. Consistent check-ins with your healthcare provider are key to safe use.
