According to the World Health Organisation\u2019s (WHO) latest report on hypertension, around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hypertension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.28 billion adults aged 30\u201379 years are living with high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> globally. What is even more alarming is that around 46% of hypertensive individuals are unaware of their medical condition. In response to this critical situation, WHO aims to reduce hypotension frequency by 33% between 2010 and 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This blog sheds light on the latest modalities of <\/span>hypertension management. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The measures would also help in reducing premature deaths globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How is India Addressing Hypertension?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension, pose significant challenges for Indian healthcare professionals. Despite India being the first country to establish an NCD action plan in 2014, targeting a 25% <\/span>reduction in hypertension<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prevalence by 2025, progress remains insufficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Inadequate Blood Pressure Monitoring in India<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent study on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssph-journal.org\/journals\/international-journal-of-public-health\/articles\/10.3389\/ijph.2024.1606766\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heterogeneity in Blood Pressure Measurements by ICMR-NCDIR <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kavyashree Seenappa et al.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came out with these\u00a0 facts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 66.7% of candidates measured their blood pressure at least once in their life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were vast disparities (30.3% to 98.5%) across districts regarding ever-measuring blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern states reported the highest average prevalence rate of 75.8% of monitoring BP.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Lakshadweep (90.8%)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Kerala (88.5%)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Tamil Nadu (83.3%)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Puducherry (83.2%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mahe in Puducherry reported the highest rates of ever-measured blood pressure at 98.5%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparatively lower prevalence rates in terms of ever-measuring blood pressure readings were noted in:<\/span>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central India [Madhya Pradesh (62.4%) and Chhattisgarh (62.3%)]<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">East [Odisha (55.5%) and Jharkhand (59.8%)]<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Districts like East Garo Hills in Meghalaya (30.3%), Khargone (West Nimar) in Madhya Pradesh (32.2%), North Garo Hills in Meghalaya (33.2%) exhibited the lowest ever-measured blood pressure rates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey provided critical findings regarding the prevalence and determinants of blood pressure measurement, prehypertension, and increased blood pressure in the country. Significant disparities in measuring BP\u00a0 were due to unequal healthcare infrastructure, lifestyle choices, socio-economic conditions, and urban-rural disparities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Latest Treatment Practices for Hypertension Management<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/HYPERTENSIONAHA.120.15026#d1e1181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Society of Hypertension (ISH)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has recommended the following practice guidelines for adult <\/span>hypertension management.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Lifestyle Modifications for Hypertension<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacological Treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Lifestyle Modifications for Controlling Hypertension<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most physicians advocate <\/span>lifestyle modification for hypertension<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the first line of therapy. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan, reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake in meals, quitting smoking, weight reduction, and moderate alcohol consumption are some common lifestyle modifications for managing hypertension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James A. Blumenthal et al.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.055329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4-month study among 140 candidates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with resistant hypertension. Participants were divided into two groups: the Lifestyle Intervention Group (dietary, behavioral weight management, and exercise guidance were given) and the Standardised Education and Physician Advice group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lifestyle Intervention Group achieved higher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.055329\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systolic blood pressure reduction (12.5 mm Hg) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compared to the Standardised Education and Physician Advice group (7.1 mm Hg). Significant improvements were also seen in resting baroreflex sensitivity (2.3 ms\/mm\u2009Hg), high-frequency heart rate variability (0.4 ln ms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and and flow-mediated dilation (0.3%) in the Lifestyle Intervention Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pharmacological Treatment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When patients do not achieve convincing results through lifestyle modification, doctors often advise pharmacological treatment along with lifestyle modification for <\/span>hypertension reduction. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4106550\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs prescribed for hypertension management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include diuretics, calcium channel blockers (CCBs), beta-blockers, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>DTx Role in Lifestyle Modifications for Hypertension<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital health interventions implement tailored lifestyle modification strategies for better BP management compared to standard treatment practices. A recent 2024 review by<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Miriam E.
