Pre-Surgery Nutrition Buildup for a Child

As a parent, watching your child undergo surgery is difficult, but small changes in diet can help make things easier. Your child’s upcoming surgery needs adequate physical and mental pre surgery preparation to bear the stress of procedure. Sufficient pre-surgical nutrition buildup helps in preparing organs and body to have quick healing and easy recovery, in other words improve the surgery outcomes.

What your child eats and the diet in days leading to surgery can help my child?

  • Give well balanced meals, which include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, along with required micro-nutrients.
  • Include complex carbohydrate and whole grains to give your child’s body all the B vitamins it needs to combat stress. Eg- Whole wheat chapati, Jowar, Millet, bajra, Ragi roti or dosa, brown rice, potato, sweet potato.
  • Include high biological protein sources as it will help in increasing immunity, promoting wound healing and reducing post-surgery protein/muscle loss. Eg - Dal, pulses, legumes – sprouts, beans, chick peas, peanut butter, eggs, chicken, fish.

  • Immunity booster antioxidants rich foods should be included as an essential part of regular meals. Eg - Copious mix of fruits and vegetables in every meal - green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, apples, broccoli, spinach, bell peppers, lemons, carrots, pumpkins
  • Ensure your child has high intake of fiber to keep the digestion on track and prevent chances of pre and post-operative constipation.
  • Maintain adequate water intake up to 1.5-2litres per day.
  • Food rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Magnesium has healing properties and prevents inflammation – eg – Include wholesome nuts and seeds as midmeal snacks are a great option.
  • Prepare food at home maintaining hygiene and using fresh ingredients only.
  • Make sure that your child is taking medications or supplementations as advised by Doctor.

Which specific food items will help my child in healing and recovery?

  • Citrus fruits – lemons, oranges, berries, mangoes, strawberries
  • Curds and fermented foods like idlis, dosas, dhoklas etc are wonderful natural probiotics which aids in better digestion of the food.
  • Moderate amount of butter, ghee, fried foods
  • Lime juice and using lemon in daily meals enhance the taste buds to better flavor post surgeries.

Is there anything I should avoid giving my child?

  • Avoid excessive sugary sweets and desserts. They not only increase the amount of sugar in blood but also delay healing.
  • Cut down refined flour, deep fried or high fat foods.
  • Restrict the consumption of processed, packaged foods.
